FAQs about ADHD Testing

What does an ADHD assessment actually tell me?

Testing offers a diagnostic profile, and distinguishes between ADHD and other conditions present (trauma, OCD, anxiety) and identify strengths and challenges. You’ll get recommendations for self-management, self-care, and accommodations. Prescribers often refer people here for testing and find these reports useful as well.

How long does the testing process take?

ADHD testing takes 5-6 hours of your time and 10-12 hours of Dr. Bike’s: Initial telehealth interview (45-60m), 3-4 hours of testing, 1-2 hours records review and follow up with collateral sources (partners, parents, therapists), 2-3 hours of scoring, analysis, and report-writing, and the feedback meeting (45-60m).

How long does it take to get my report?

The written report is typically delivered 3-4 weeks after the final testing session. For a faster turn-around time, expedited delivery of 1 week is available for an additional charge.

If you have an accommodation deadline or your medical doctor wants the report to consider the information in their prescribing decisions, let me know when booking.

What if I have a complex history?

I specialize in cases where ADHD presents alongside other conditions like C-PTSD, OCD, or learning disabilities. These are exactly the people that benefit from careful, nuanced assessment.

If your situation is outside my scope, I will tell you and I will send you referral options.

Is testing covered by my insurance?

All testing packages at Gentle Intensives are self-pay. At your request, we will provide a superbill that you can submit to your insurance for packages you have paid for in full. Your insurance company will let you know what services they will and won’t reimburse you for.

What is the rescheduling and cancellation policy?

Regardless of the reason for cancellation or rescheduling, at least two week’s notice is required. Otherwise, a $500 fee applies. This is because there is a long waiting list for testing, and preparations are made prior to each evaluation (contacting therapists and schools for records, consulting with prescribers, etc.)

Getting Ready for Testing

*****

Before testing: Your testing day will go more smoothly with a few simple preparations.

+ Aim for a full night’s rest so you’re at your natural baseline.

+ Prepare a light snack and pack water to keep your energy steady.

+ Dress in layers. Temperatures can vary, and being able to adjust will help you feel more comfortable during testing.

+ Most importantly, bring your glasses or contacts if you use them, as visual clarity is essential.

If your evaluation includes a records review, you’ll upload copies of past reports and important records as soon as possible after scheduling, so Dr. Bike has time to review them.

On the day of your testing: Arrive on time, or even a bit early. (There’s a waiting room.) That’s it. The purpose of standardized testing is to find out more about who you already are and what you are naturally able to do. So, there’s nothing extra that you need to learn or know how to do in order to be prepared. We’ll spend our time together gathering data in different ways (as noted in 1-6 above).

Driving in from Virginia, Pennsylvania, or D.C.? There’s a local market and coffee shop just two blocks away. And our office is surrounded by trees and next to the Shoal Creek walking path, offering a lovely environment during breaks.
